The James
Low Western Front – USA Americana Country Folk
"Whiskey Farmer" Tour: Nov 1st to Nov 18th 2012 The James Low Western Front is a fearsome four-piece band from Portland, Oregon, playing American Roots / Alt Country music with a distinct outsider-country vision.
In Whiskey Farmer, singer-songwriter James Low has conceived a concept album, depicting the plight of the character in the title: an Average Joe, quirkily portrayed on the album’s front cover by Low himself.
“Offbeat, original and - given its gloomy subject - curiously enjoyable”
“Cheerful? Not so much. Beautifully wrought and desperately heartbreaking? Yes, and yes, thanks to Low’s steady voice on wearily resigned lyrics, over dusty, Western-style accompaniment from the rest of the band.”
Listen, Dammit
“Low moves his earlier debt to the likes of Townes Van Zandt along the road to Gram Parsons, whose “white man’s soul” ring-fences his band’s groove-filled and shuffling country rock.”
Q Magazine
“One fine piece of work, musically and lyrically. The title track, Whiskey Farmer, evokes Steinbeck like visions of the dust bowl Great Depression, like something out of The Grapes of Wrath.”
